The “Live in RVA” Series: South of the River

A runner’s perspective of south of the James begins with a trip across the Huguenot Bridge to Riverside Drive, a brief stint up to Forest Hill Avenue, back down to Riverside and then the Lee Bridge. Wait, there are HOUSES over there? We thought it was just for hill running!

The railroad bridge on Riverside Drive marks one of the most challenging inclines for runners!

Seriously, I began my first real exploration of the South of the James neighborhoods through marathon training. It’s a necessary evil to run along Riverside Drive to be able to mimic the Richmond Marathon course and to get a good 20 mile training distance in one big loop of the city.

The first year I ran the Richmond Marathon, it made me proud to hear participants comment on the beauty of our Riverside Drive as we trotted through Pony Pasture. Coming up Scottsview and making our way to Forest Hill Blvd on race day, the neighbors are out cheering us on and the visitors take note of the friendly vibe!

It doesn’t end there. We continue on Forest Hills Blvd and you can’t help but take in the sights of lovely architecture and well kept lawns, decorative porches and loads for people providing support to the runners along the way through Forest Hill and Woodland Heights neighborhoods.

And ALL of the runners, visitors and those who currently inhabit the North side of the river, notice Crossroads Coffee with a comment about a cool, local coffee spot they want to be sure to remember later.

What’s so great about South of the James is the accessibility they have to the James River along Riverside Drive with Pony Pasture and 42nd Street park just a walk or a bike ride away. If you love the outdoors, you will love to live here. Quick access to the James River Trail System, Forest Hill Park and the James River itself.

Also worth mentioning is the South of the James Market held Year-Round on Saturday mornings in Forest Hill Park. Local produce and hand-made items, hot food trucks and wildly famous doughnuts make this market a popular destination for locals from both sides of the Rivah!
